If only this tree could talk

Using a Sharpie marker, Halliday counted the rings from the outer edge inward to estimate the approximate age of the tree that fell.

The month of March went out like a lion, and as it did, a tree came down over Highway 128 in Cloverdale.  It not only shut down traffic, it took out a power line and knocked out electricity to about 365 customers in the area.

The roots of the tree are actually in the top part of this photograph.

Jimmy Halliday lives on Highway 128 and often walks his dog in the area. When he saw the tree, he was really curious about its age so he decided to count the number of rings on the trunk.  He wasn’t  surprised to find out it was over 100 years old.

“I’m not too good with numbers so I had to count a couple times because I kept losing track of the rings. That’s why I finally used the Sharpie to mark them off.”

He was going to mark his birthday year, but forgot.

The one thing he’s pretty sure of, though, is that Theodore Roosevelt was probably president when the tree took root.

By his count, the tree is about 104 years old – give or take a ring or two.
