LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Ahead of Earth Day this weekend, members of the Tree Lafayette organization were hoping to encourage people in the community to go green.

They planted a tree across from the Lafayette city hall this afternoon, after Lafayette City Council member Ron Campbell read a proclamation for Earth Day.

Tree Lafayette Board member Gail Brock told the story of the "Survivor Tree," which has now lived 17 years since being 500 yards away from the Oklahoma City bombing site in April 1995.

She said she hopes the event will show people that every tree matters.

"We get oxygen. We get shade. We get security. We get safety," Brock said. "We plant trees on streets, and you will see that street is more walked, and people are more friendly, and they visit their neighbors more often, because there is a tree in their front yard."

"Not only helping the environment, but also helping that neighborhood, because people are then seeing that this is going to be a nice place to live," Campbell said.

Tree Lafayette organizers are looking for more volunteers to plant 71 trees outside of Tecumseh Middle School and Jefferson High School, for Arbor Day on May 5 at 9:00 a.m.
