The village is planning a tree planting ceremony at 10 a.m. Friday at Shepard Middle School in honor of the school’s 50th Anniversary and Arbor Day.
Mayor Harriet Rosenthal on April 16 during a village board meeting proclaimed that the village will celebrate Arbor Day on Friday.
The village was recently recognized by the Arbor Day Foundation as a Tree City USA community, village officials said.
The Tree City USA program is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation and the National Association of State Foresters and the United States Department of Agriculture’s Forest Service, officials said.
Communities that earn this designation are required to have a tree board or department, a tree-care ordinance, a community forestry program and an Arbor Day observance and proclamation, officials said.
