On Saturday, March 10, scores of volunteers joined together to celebrate Arbor Day, to recognize the 20th anniversary of Tree Davis and to plant trees throughout the Wildhorse neighborhood. The event was a great success and more than three dozen oaks, ashes and other shade trees were added to our urban forest canopy.
The many people who contributed their efforts to the event are too numerous to name, but I’d like to offer my own thanks to Davis City Council member Dan Wolk and Laura Westrup, chairwoman of the Tree Commission, from whom the idea of the event sprang; Rob Cain, the city of Davis’ urban forest manager, and Keren Costanzo, executive director of Tree Davis, without whose organization and endless hard work nothing would have been accomplished; state Sen. Lois Wolk, whose support for Tree Davis and for the urban forestry program has been consistent for more than two decades; Glenn Flamik of CalFire, for his organizational assistance and vigorous physical assistance; Davis Ace Hardware, for the donation of many trees; and to every volunteer who helped haul, plant, stake and mulch. Your efforts are appreciated more than you know.
May Tree Davis and the trees you planted continue to thrive!
