The initial investigation revealed the driver, 18, was speeding in his Toyota Corolla while traveling south on Gilbert, Jones said.

"He lost control of the vehicle and struck a tree on the wrong side of the street," Jones said, adding that the road was wet from heavy rain.

The driver was able to get out of the vehicle, but the passenger became trapped in the heavily damaged Corolla, Jones said.

Firefighters extricated the passenger and took him to UCI Medical Center in Orange, where he remains in critical but stable condition, Jones said.

The driver complained of chest pain and was taken to St. Jude Medical Center in Fullerton.

Gilbert was closed from Hughes to Pioneer Avenue until 7 a.m.

Anyone who may have witnesses the crash was asked to call Fullerton accident investigator Brandon Clyde at 714-738-6812 or Mike Moon at 714-738-6812.
