Police: Man Killed Over Neighbors' Tree Dispute - Baltimore ...

POSTED: 9:22 am EDT March 30, 2012
UPDATED: 9:49 am EDT March 30, 2012

A fight between two families over three trees turned deadly in Allegany County.Maryland State Police said an ongoing dispute over property lines reached a boiling point between Alexander Malaska, 69, and Dennis Liller, 43, both of Oldtown, on Wednesday evening.Police said the dispute began in September when Malaska and Leroy Robertson couldn't resolves a dispute over whose property three trees were on between their homes.Detectives said Malaska's son then cut down the three trees. That decision caused Robertson's daughter to press charges against Malaska, which were schedule to go to court next month. On Wednesday, Malaska found "no trespassing" signs on the stumps and confronted Robertson about them, officials said. Police said they were called to resolve the dispute, but Robertson's daughter and Liller later went to Malaska's home and confronted his son about the situation.Police said Liller punched Malaska's son in the face. Malaska then came out of the home and shot Liller in the chest with a rifle. Liller died of his injuries.Malaska has been charged with manslaughter and is being held on $300,000 bail.

City of Charlotte: Deny billboard company's tree-cutting requests ...

Charlotte officials want the state to deny most of Adams Outdoor Advertising’s requests to cut down hundreds of trees along city interstates under a new billboard law that went into effect this month.

In a letter sent Friday to the N.C. Department of Transportation, City Arborist Don McSween said officials want the state to turn down 16 out of the company’s 21 petitions. In the bulk of the cases, the city pointed to nine criteria in the DOT rules that would allow the state to deny a petition.

For example, the city said a request to remove at least 270 trees and shrubs by a billboard at the intersection of the Interstate 485 inner loop and Westinghouse Boulevard should be struck down, in part because some trees were spared as the highway was built to block noise and provide beautification to the area. In five petitions, the city cited concerns about possible erosion.

The city also pointed out that many of the tree-removal requests involve signs that violate city ordinances on billboards.

Adams’ General Manager Kevin Madrzykowski said the permits sought by the company are for billboard displays permitted by the state. He said the company is confident its applications were completed correctly and in accordance with state law and the NCDOT rules.

“The law and rules governing vegetation removal on NCDOT Right of Way are clear, and we look forward to the permit applications progressing to the NCDOT for their review and approval,” Madrzykowski said in an email. “Again, as this process is new to everyone, we will be happy to answer any questions the NCDOT may have of us during the process and will continue to work cooperatively with both the NCDOT and City of Charlotte as we move ahead.”

According to the city, the state now has 30 days to review the tree-removal applications.

New law

Under a law that went into effect on March 1, billboard companies can ask the N.C. DOT for a permit to clear up to 340 feet in front of billboards. Previously, they could clear no more than a 250-foot window.

The new law was passed after lobbying from the N.C. Outdoor Advertising Association and billboard companies. But environmentalists and the city of Charlotte objected to the new rules. The concerns were raised again after the DOT said local governments could offer input but not have final say on tree-cutting requests. A lawsuit was filed earlier this month on behalf of Scene N.C. to try to stop the state from approving applications.

In his letter to the state DOT, McSween, the arborist, said the city appreciated the opportunity to submit feedback on Adams’ tree-cutting proposals. “However, the city of Charlotte continues to be concerned that the temporary administrative rules do not allow for meaningful local government input and specifically for citation of our local ordinances and regulations as a reason to deny tree removal,” McSween wrote.

“Our fundamental concern remains the vital need for local communities to retain the ability to protect the natural environment, specifically trees and tree canopy.”

The city of Charlotte has previously barred billboard companies from cutting down trees larger than four inches in diameter. In the letter, McSween said the city had a tree canopy of 46 percent, one of the best in the country among large cities.

Adams officials have said the company wants to make sure that advertisers that pay for messages on signs can have them seen by passing motorists. The company also has said it may not remove as many trees as it listed on applications, and the final impact of the law won’t be as significant as some fear.

State Sen. Harry Brown, a Republican from Onslow County who was the bill’s primary sponsor, has also said he thinks the concerns over the billboard law are “being blown out of proportion.”

Tree-Trimmer Electrocuted In Montgomery County « CBS Philly

By Tim Jimenez

ABINGTON (CBS) - A tree trimmer in Montgomery County died on the job Thursday after police say he was electrocuted.

Authorities say the incident happened around 3 p.m. in the Huntingdon Valley Section of Abington.

A tree trimming company was working in the back yards of the 1800 block of Pine Road.

Police say one of the workers, a 47-year-old Philadelphia resident, was trimming limbs when he accidentally came in contact with a high tension wire and was electrocuted.

Authorities say a co-worker on the ground was somehow able to break contact between the victim and the power line but the victim was still stuck in the tree.

It wasn’t until PECO cut off power that firefighters were able to bring the man to the ground where he was pronounced dead.

Police did not release the name of the victim or the company that he worked for.

golany architects: two-tree house

two-tree house by golany architects, israel

two-tree house was designed by tel-aviv based practice golany architects. the house is constructed among mature jerusalem pine trees.
two of the trees have grown in the exact place where the house was to be located. the site was tight, and this led to the decision to integrate the
two trees within the perimeter of the house. preserving and rendering the mature trees as part of the house required attention and care.
it was a daring decision that resulted in a house with a special ambiance. the house, which now appears to have grown there,
actually began as a recycled shipping container.

it was constructed by applying prefabrication wherever possible, with all the interior finishes, insulation and structure completed off-site.
it was brought to the site fully prepared to serve as a dwelling. the timber cladding, light roof over steel ceiling,
stone work, and decks were designed in advance, and were complimented by works on site, after the house was inhabited.

prefabrication was chosen to achieve the tight timeframe and budget, but also as part of the strategy to preserve the trees.
with the local construction practice, which is typically heavy masonry construction, it would be impossible to save and preserve the trees.
the pines not only lend desirability to this unique house but also serve as a natural source of air-conditioning.
their shade also protects the timber from the harsh sun. the pine trees were examined as part of the design process.
their continued growth is monitored and responded to, which results in a house that is a living structure.

tree trunk glassblowing molds by marco merkel

'scolyt' series by marco merkel

taking on randomness as his tool, german designer marco merkel created 'scolyt', a series of glass and wood objects using that
which he found in nature to cast his work. merkel collected rotten trees, split wood, fallen logs etc. and transformed them into
blow moulds to create organic glass vessels produced through an uncontrolled / uncontrollable process. merkel has let nature guide his forms,
letting go of the production process which often calls for precision and perfection, and instead, embracing defects and disfigurements.

the project was conceived under the direction of professor axel kufus at the universität der künste berlin where merkel is an
industrial design student. the glass objects were produced in museumsdorf baruther glashütte

Thai resort features tree pod dining

Tree Pod dining could easily become one of the most novel ways to enjoy a romantic dinner or a long lazy lunch among the tree tops ... and that’s exactly what guests at the Six Senses’ Soneva Kiri will be doing. Located on the remote Thai island of Kood, Soneva Kiri is a luxury holiday destination set amid the lush tropical rainforests off the south-east coast of the Gulf of Siam. While the resort offers guests an array of dining experiences and resort activities, we just love the look of the tree pod dining.

Set high among the tree tops, tree pod dining is an innovative way to experience a meal. Situated 16 feet (5 meters) off the ground, the dining pod is surrounded by lush tree tops and views of the surrounding sandy beaches. The pod is constructed with a rigid frame that is wrapped in woven rattan and can accommodate up to four diners. Guests can relax and enjoy the panorama while their food and drinks are delivered by a "flying" waiter, harnessed to a zip-line.

While this experience is definitely one-of-a-kind, it is not the only unique dining experience happening at Soneva Kiri. This Easter, guests will have the opportunity to dine with Buzz Aldrin and Sir Robin Knox-Johnston - the second man on the moon meets round-the-world yachtsman. The historic dinner will take place over the Easter weekend, where guests are invited to dine with these two legendary adventurers.

A night for two at Soneva Kiri starts from US$950 and includes scheduled air transfers, three meals daily with house brand alcohol or soft drinks, minibar, in-villa wireless, laundry service, selected resort activities and the chance to dine in the tree-top dining pod.

Climate change tree test begins | JunkScience.com

More waste caused by PlayStation® Climatology: “European forestry scientists have begun a multi-national field trial to identify trees that will thrive as predicted climate change develops.

Thousands of trees are being planted in test plots from Portugal in the south to Scotland in the north.

The trees will be measured and monitored as they grow in the diverse environments.

The results are likely to have a marked impact on which species of trees are planted in the coming decades.

In Wales, a cleared area of the Crychan Forest about the size of five football pitches is being planted in a carefully mapped grid system.

The saplings going into the ground have been imported from the Mediterranean, Eastern Europe, California and beyond.

Scientists here – and across Europe – know that climate change is likely to have a big impact on how well trees survive and thrive in the future, and how resistant they may be to a new wave of disease which the predicted warmer conditions may bring.

Digging » Plant This: Anacacho orchid tree

Plant This: Anacacho orchid tree

Almost everyone (in central Texas’ zone 8 or 9) has room for an Anacacho orchid tree (Bauhinia lunarioides) in their garden. After all, it only grows 8 to 12 feet tall and 6 to 10 feet wide, with an airy habit and tiny, semi-evergreen leaves shaped like deer hoofprints. Although native to the thin limestone soils west and southwest of Austin rather than the deep clay found in parts of our city, this spring-blooming tree seems to grow fine in gumbo clay, or at least so I found in my former garden.

I’m growing a new one in my current garden, and it’s looking gorgeous this spring, with flowers like white linen handkerchiefs tied to the ends of its branches. They are slightly fragrant, and bees love them.

When not in bloom, its silvery gray bark is attractive, and did I mention those cute cloven leaves?

It’s a drought-tolerant small tree (when established) for full sun or light shade. So go on, central Texas gardeners, and plant one. You know you have a spot for it.

POLICY: If a Tree Falls ... Does Anybody Care? | The Cornell Daily ...

There is currently a worldwide movement going on around us, but few Americans are aware of it.There is currently a worldwide movement going on around us, but few Americans are aware of it: The United Nations has retroactively proclaimed 2011 as "The International Year of Forests," and wants to continue tree enthusiasm into 2012.

In doing so, the UN is finally bringing notoriety to an issue which has too long fallen to the periphery of policy.

To the conservatives out there, I know the resolution may at first come across as a piece of liberal, modern-day hippie legislation. But after doing my homework, I can safely say that it’s not just the tree huggers of the world who should be supporting the movement.

The scientific community continues to stress that greenhouse gas, produced from human activities, is the leading cause of global warming. And what is the Earth’s first natural line of defense against these rising CO2 emissions you may ask? Your answer: Trees.

David Nowak, of the USDA Forest Service, elaborated on the actual process in his dissertation, explaining that trees remove gaseous pollution by an advance in the leaf stomata, eventually diffusing the particles after they enter the interior of the leaf.  It is estimated that a single mature tree can absorb upwards of 48 pounds of CO2 per year, and release 260 pounds of oxygen at the same annual rate.

The world as a whole is currently emitting an average of 4.49 tons of CO2 per person. With such a staggering statistic it’s obvious that the world will not be able to continue production at the rate it’s going without exhausting resources and itself in the process.

Even though the importance of forests has never seemed more evident, it appears that man and Mother Nature alike are making preservation all the more difficult. This summer, fires decimated a multitude of forests along the Rockies, the Amazon recently experienced two large-scale droughts and Australia’s own eucalyptus trees are falling victim to rising temperatures. And while the forests burn around us, men still continue to exploit them through logging — a practice which experts say is done to an unnecessary extent.

So what is the world to do? It seems the Obama Administration has taken the first steps towards making America a leader in forest fire mitigation and general forest support costs through allocations in the stimulus plan. At the end of the day however, you cannot just throw money at a problem like this but instead must cultivate a genuine concern amongst people. We should not gaze at the problem of deforestation through the lens of an American citizen, but instead look upon it as a citizen of the world.

Ray Lewis gave the pregame speech to the Stanford men's basketball team before last night's win over UMass. My favorite part is probably Andrew Zimmermann's face around 1:20.

I know MSG was pro-Minutemen and Stanford is a Nike school, but I was really hoping Ray Ray would close with "We must protect this HOUUUUUUUUSE."

'One Tree Hill' Recap: Burning Memories and an Engagement ...

One Tree Hill Bethany Joy Galeotti Antwon Tanner - H 2012

Brownie Harris/The CW

One Tree Hill is in its final two weeks. Ever. With most of the major external conflicts wrapped up, the last episodes of season nine are focusing on saying goodbye to the characters in just the right way.

Star Sophia Bush got to direct the penultimate episode, an honor she didn't take lightly. "I knew that it was the last chance that I was going to have to tell these stories and to honor these characters and to really show their relationships," she told THR.

[Warning: Spoilers ahead.]

The episode starts out with Julian (Austin Nichols) pitching his TV show idea to Brooke (Sophia Bush). It’s a funny way to laugh at their own network, The CW, as Brooke compares Julian’s potential show to “The Creek.”

“We like vampires,” says Brooke, imitating a TV executive.

The scene then flips to Julian giving his real pitch, and the executives seem impressed. As for Brooke, she’s venting about her dad to her mom.

STORY: Sophia Bush on Directing 'One Tree Hill's' Penultimate Episode

Haley (Bethany Joy Galeotti) is preparing to emcee the annual Tree Hill Burning Boat Festival.

Clay (Robert Buckley) and Quinn (Shantel VanSanten) are preparing the beach house for his son Logan’s arrival.

Julian calls Brooke to tell her that the executives like the pitch, but now he has to write a script.

Back in Tree Hill, Julian is struggling to write a script for his new Ravens show. He’s frustrated that he wasn’t there when this all went down. Brooke gives him her secret diary from back at that time – but rips out one page of it before.

Mouth (Lee Norris) -- who is thin again! -- and Millie (Lisa Goldstein) talk about Mouth missing sports. Millie tells Mouth that he should host a sports show.

Logan arrives at Clay and Quinn’s and likes his room. But he’s freaked out when he sees the ocean outside his window. “I’ve never been this close to the ocean before,” he says.

Julian reads Brooke’s diary. She shares her thoughts about her parents and their lack of a connection to her. It’s a smart way to reflect on the Brooke’s past on the show.

STORY: 'One Tree Hill's' Final Season 'Will Be Dark,' Says Creator Mark Schwahn

Brooke meets up with her mom, who is frazzled about something, and then Brooke realizes that she’s been entertaining a guest in her hotel room. It turns out to be Brooke’s dad. Brooke runs out of the room in horror.

Clay takes Logan to the beach and helps him get his feet wet in the water. But Logan gets scared quickly.

At prep for the Tree Hill Burning Boat Festival, Haley runs into Skills (Antwon Tanner), who plans on burning a big box of CDs at the fest. But Haley takes the CDs, in an attempt to save the environment. Later, Haley is going through the CD's from Skills, and finds an old flyer from Tric.

Julian meets up with Brooke’s dad to tell him to be better to Brooke. “You’re a dick. You should be ashamed of yourself,” Julian says as he leaves.

Chase (Stephen Colletti) is back to bartending, and not happy about it. He complains to the tattooed twins, who aren’t the most sympathetic listeners.

Logan can’t sleep at the beach house, so Clay and Quinn build a tent for Logan to sleep in because he likes camping.

Brooke’s parents drop by her house to apologize. They say Brooke doesn’t know the whole story. They say that they bought out the investors and are keeping Baker Man. They want to run the company with Brooke. “I think you just got your company back,” says Julian after her parents leave.

Brooke and Haley meet by the river for a chat. They talk about the old days, and about Nathan, who went camping with Jamie. Brooke talks about her parents. “I want to give them another chance, but every time I do I feel like a fool,” she says.

The new host for Millie’s show is Kylie, who gets a bit of stage fright.

Brooke reads Julian’s script, and tells him it’s really good. He’s added a Julian character to the story. “I want to tell this story, your story. I want to do it justice,” Julian tells Brooke. He’s still waiting on the network’s decision.

Haley tells Chase it’s Tric’s 10-year anniversary. Chase is feeling better about Tric, and calls it his home. He says he was visited by angels, “naughty” twin angels.

Quinn talks to Logan about coming into the water, eventually bribing him with ice cream.

Millie and Mouth meet with Jerry to talk about Kylie, who isn’t working out on the show. Of course, Jerry’s not interested in replacing her. Mouth and Millie say that Skills would make a great replacement.

Brooke meets Julian at the soundstage, where he has mapped out all the rooms for his Ravens television show. He tells Brooke that the network liked the script, and they will start casting next week.

It’s finally time for the Tree Hill Burning Boat Festival, and Millie and Skills are introducing it on air. But when the camera goes on, he seems to freeze. But he’s just joking around, and he does great.

Chase and Chuck are at the festival. Chuck is thinking about burning stuff of his dad’s but decides to just burn some other stuff this year. Brooke decides to burn her diary.

It’s time for Haley’s big speech. “I say we take all those failures and let downs and burdens, and let’s torch them,” she says. She then lights the boat full of bad memories.

Back at Clay and Quinn’s house, Logan and the couple are sleeping in a tent in the living room again. “We should get married,” says Clay. He hasn’t gotten her a ring, but he wants to marry her. Logan offers up his glow ring. Quinn says yes.

Brooke decides to give her parents another chance. The episode ends with the three of them watching the fireworks over the burning boat.

One Tree Hill Review: If You're Happy And You Know It - TV Fanatic

Well that was certainly a change of pace.  After an episode that went into all out action mode with Dan yielding a shotgun, and one that tugged on our heart strings like they were trying to defeat John Cena in a game of tug o' war as Dan sadly left this world, "Anyone Who Had A Heart" was a much less strenuous hour.

The penultimate episode in the history of One Tree Hill was just plain happy.  All of the characters were happy, I assume it made all of the viewers happy, and the fact that Sophia Bush was able to direct one of the final episodes of the series - one that focused a lot on how important her Brooke Davis was to the show - definitely made me happy.

Haley in Town

Maybe nobody was happier than Julian Baker, who was inspired to turn Lucas's "Ravens" book into a television series.  Not only did the studio buy his idea, thanks to Brooke's high school diary and her hot tub idea, but Julian even got to put himself into the story!

I love Julian, but seriously?  You're going take this story written by Lucas, and then throw yourself into Tree Hill High School and steal a major event from the author himself?  Not cool, bro.

The way it seems now, I don't think I would watch the show he's creating.  It's not One Tree Hill anymore.  By creating this new Julian high school character, he's taking crucial events away from Lucas (game-winning shot) and Nathan (sex tape), and inevitably destroying the basis of the first four seasons of the show...the estranged brothers.

Even though he was making out like a bandit with this tv show deal, Julian wasn't all smiles, specifically when Ted Davis was messing with his beloved wife.  You had to love seeing him go to bat for Brooke and attempting to take down Ted for his terrible parenting.

In the end, though, Ted somehow came around.  Maybe Victoria, Brooke, and the rest finally got to him - or maybe it's just another phase for Ted - but he seems to be ready to be a family again.  We may never see how long the three of them running Baker Man lasts, but my guess would be no more than a couple of years.

Clay and Quinn might have given dear Julian a run for his money in the happiness department, as they spent the weekend with Logan at the house.  I would also be as happy as a lark if I got to spend all that time with the King of Cute.

They finally did it.  It took them a long time to pull it off, and I assume it only came about because of the introduction of the Logan character, but they were able to get me to care about Clay and Quinn.  When Clay asked her to marry him in that tent, I felt something.  Me?  The one who did nothing but trash on them for the past two years?  Yup, I was happy for them, and Logan, for becoming a family.  It didn't hurt that Logan raised his hand to give up his "power ring" for the occasion.  What a sweetie!

It was also great to see Mouth, Millie, and Skills figure out the best way to get them all on the air.  Watching Kylie freeze up on screen was pretty funny, and Skills pretending to do the same his first time on air was downright hilarious.

The appearances by Junk and Fergie were also welcomed, as was the fact that Karen offered to sell Chase Tric!  It's too bad Nathan didn't get to enjoy the happiness, and Haley had to do all of the Burning Boat stuff by herself.

I hope this wasn't just the calm before the storm, because I don't think I could take any earth shattering events in the series finale of One Tree Hill next week.

What did you all think of "Anyone Who Had a Heart?"  Was it nice to see all of our favorite characters happy for once?  Or did not enough happen for you?  What about how this whole thing is ending with Julian's tv show?  Is it too much like "The Creek," which was actually referenced on screen?  And how do you feel about Julian's new character stealing events from Lucas and Nathan?

Finally, how are you going to fill the days after One Tree Hill ends for good next week?

Tree World Review | Gamezebo

Updated Mar 28, 2012, 10:19am

When it comes to freemium mobile games, few developers are as notable as The Playforge. Responsible for both Zombie Farm and Zombie Life, these gamemakers have just released their third title into the woods, and it’s about as far from their previously undead stomping grounds as you can imagine. Welcome to Tree World.

The object of the game is to grow a tree and fill it with cute critters that can be traded with other players. Whenever you want to grow the tree taller to make room for another branch (or grow said branch) you’ll need to spend “tree food,” the basic in-game currency. Luckily the critters you collect will produce tree food after a set amount of time, making this a nice little self-sustaining ecosystem.

Tree WorldTree World

Getting animals is easy enough, as a friendly leaf-faced tree fairy will summon new ones to the base of your tree every so often when you tap on her home, and then you’ll simply need to find an empty branch to place them on.

Each branch can grow a certain habitat style, like mushrooms or vines, and each animal has a preference that you’ll want to try to match up to. You can speed things up and buy new critters directly with the use of gems, the game’s premium currency, but even here the game is kind; you’re amply rewarded with gems for each new species you discover.

But while gifts from ol’ leaf-face are nice, the real draw in Tree World is trading. Let’s say you have three squirrels. Hop on over to the neighbors page, visit the trees of folks you know (or make friends with random strangers), and keep an eye out for a tree that’s missing the animal you want to get rid of. Once you do, find an animal in their tree that you don’t have, and propose a trade. Different animals have a different rarity rating, so don’t expect someone to gladly accept a common creature in exchange for a rare one – but so long as the trade you’re offering up is fair, there’s a good chance that the other player will accept it the next time they log in.

…and that’s it.

Tree World Tree World

While Tree World is both adorable and addictive, it’s missing a lot of the features that you’d expect to see in a game like this. You can’t breed animals, there are no mini-games to play, there are no funny hats or decorations – it’s just a very bare bones package. If this turns out to be merely a starting point, than Tree World has plenty of room to blossom. But as it is, it’s merely a cute diversion that leaves us wanting for more.

More than anything, Tree World ends up playing like a very cute and cuddly version of baseball card collecting. Checking out which animals you have, which animals you need, and trying to figure out who you can trade with to complete your collection makes up the bulk of Tree World’s appeal. And while that sounds like it might be kinda dull – and in some ways, it is – there’s a very “gotta catch’em all!” nature to the game that makes it hard to put down. After all – who doesn’t love discovering adorable new creatures like the “koalaphant” or the “dog bird?”

Tree World has some strong roots, but it’s going to need a little more foliage if it wants to live up to its potential. This is definitely one to try, but let’s hope some future updates flesh things out a little more.
